Crunk Beats

History

Crunk beats first arrived in the early 1990s and originated in Atlanta, Georgia. This style of music derived from Hip Hop and it is fast becoming a popular choice in clubs, on the streets and also on the radio. For many, Crunk music is a harsher form of Rap music and a lot of music critics have dismissed this as a form of music, but it is a popular style in clubs and is becoming more common in homes and cars. The unquestionable creator of Crunk is Lil Jon the producer, composer, promoter and rapper who has pioneered this style of music relentlessly.

The term Crunk once meant harsh cry and has also been associated with being ‘crazy drunk’ or crunk for short. It is also suggested that for some the term meant being ‘cranked up’ to such excitement that would occur when drunk and high at the same time. In order to make the term and the music more commercially viable, Lil Jon referred to Crunk as being in a ‘state of heightened excitement’.

Main Features:

Crunk music is essentially a hardcore form of Rap music which many feel has more to do with expression than actual music. The main element of this type of music is the drum beats with a heavy bass. Although deriving from hip-hop, the tempo of Crunk is definitely slower. Crunk music has been traditionally associated with rappers shouting out lyrics in an aggressive style, but the main focus of this style is primarily on the beats and music instead of the lyrics. The defining appeal of Crunk music is its fast heavy bass accompanied by energetic beats and feverish chanting and it is this which makes it a perfect party music especially with the use of shout and retort hip-hop chants that are so often present. It has become a way of releasing and expressing anger and extreme exhilaration.

Artists

Many critics of music felt that Crunk was a passing trend but it has proved to be ever more popular and has established itself as a music style which seems here to stay. There is no indication that this music will fade but will become a part of music history. Crunk music did not fully establish itself until the early 2000s. In 2003 the singles ‘Never Scared’ by Bone Crusher, ‘Damn!’ by Youngbloodz and ‘Get Low’ by Lil Jon were all hit singles and all from the Crunk genre. This was followed in 2004 by the smash hit from Usher ‘Yeah’ which was produced by Lil Jon.

There are many artists associated with the Crunk beats style including Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz who claim to be the Kings of Crunk with the Prince of Crunk being Lil Scrappy. The Queen and Princess of Crunk are Shaina and Ciara respectively. With Lil Jon calling his albums ‘Kings of Krunk’ and ‘Crunk Juice’, the term became more widely known. The term ‘White Crunk’ was a further development and was used by Kanye West in early 2005 to describe the sounds of the Scottish all white band Franz Ferdinand who were known for their gritty drum sounds.
