Dirty South Beats

History

Dirty South beats as the name suggests, originated in the southern states of the United States, including Dallas, Texas, Nashville, Houston, Atlanta, New Orleans, Memphis, San Antonio, Miami, Birmingham and Orlando. It emerged from the club scene in these and other southern states in the late 1980s. It is only third in popularity for this type of music behind East Coast hip-hop and West Coast hip-hop respectively. Due to the fact that there wasn’t such a big market for this type of music in these states, Southern rap artists found if difficult to get their records released and had to resort to releasing their music independently.

Main Features

The first style of southern rap to become popular was bass music from Miami in Florida. Designed mainly for clubs, it had a hard bass and the lyrics used were comedic rather than with any deep meaning. Although many artists of this style were releasing music for years, it never really gained any sway outside of the southern states. The main characteristics of dirty south beats are the straightforward lyrics. It is recognizable for its sound and use of slang than for the contents of the lyrics. Southern rappers usually rap about fashion trends, nightlife, car culture or unique lingo. The southern drawl is evident in dirty south beats.

Artists

One of the first artists in the dirty south beats style was Master P. He released catchy tunes with banging hip-hop beats and did not focus on lyrical content. His song ‘Bout it, Bout it’ became a dirty south style anthem. Some southern rappers however were using lyrics which were sexually explicit and violent and this was typically causing some controversy. The 2 Live Crew and The Geto Boys were notorious for using this type of lyricism. But with the release of their highly acclaimed second album ‘Grip It! On That Other Level’, The Geto Boys, had produced the first classic dirty south rap album and it became a hit with hip hop fans and this gave more exposure to this style of music.

On the back of this album, other southern rap artists started to appear such as the Underground Kingz (UGK) and 8Ball & MJG who became two of the most popular southern rap bands around. One of the most notable artists in this genre are OukKast who released their debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik in 1994. With this album going platinum, Dirty South beats was propelled further into the limelight and the band have become of the best selling rap artists ever. Some other southern rap artists include Ludacris, Scarface, Lil’ Wayne, Young Jeezy, and Paul Wall and there are many noteworthy albums from this style including ‘Too Hard To Swallow’ by UGK, ‘The Diary’ by Scarface, ‘Nasty as They Wanna Be’ by 2 Live Crew and of course the platinum selling ‘Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik’ by the superb OutKast.
