G-Funk Beats & Gangsta Funk Beats

History

In the 1990s a sub genre of hip hop music, Gangsta or G-Funk came out of West Coast Gangsta rap but there is some debate over who actually created the sound. Some people have attributed this accolade to Dr. Dre although there are others in the industry who would contribute the development of Gangsta Funk Beats to Cold187um from Above the Law. Apparently, Dr. Dre borrowed the ideas of Cold187um when he produced Deathrow’s debut album ‘The Chronic’ but gives himself the full credit full credit for creating this new sound.

It is also rumored that Dr. Dre has been known to take the full credit for other producers who have worked alongside him on other albums. G-Funk became Dr. Dre’s own variation of gangsta rap with the first recognized G-Funk single being ‘Deep Cover’ by Snoop Dogg in 1992. What stands in Dr. Dre’s favor in the ongoing debate is the fact that he released ‘The Chronic’ before Above the Law’s ‘Black Mafia Life’ but those conspiracy theorists will just refute this with the fact that Dr. Dre had actually spent much time with Above the Law while they were producing ‘Black Mafia Life’ and that he just got there first with the release date of his album.

Main Features

The main style of Gangsta Funk beats is to use funk music alongside tempos which have been lowered artificially. It uses slow rhythmic grooves, melodious synthesizers with multi-layers, a deep bass and female vocals in the background. The lyrics used in gangsta funk is usually littered with violence, drugs, sex and women in a slurred rapping style so that words could be better understood and so that the rhythmic essence would be maintained. One of the main features of gangsta funk is the less frequent use of sampling which other rap styles have so heavily used. Any samples which are used are usually unaltered – in fact Dr. Dre is well known for getting musicians to play the sampled song in order to give it a more unique sound then just taking the original music.

Artists

As well as the ongoing debate between Dr. Dre and Cold187um regarding who actually developed gangsta or g-funk beats, there were many other artists who continued the trend and made it one of the most popular sub genres of hip-hop ever. Warren G and Snoop Dogg both worked with Coldum187 before moving to Deathrow Records with Dr. Dre. There is no doubt that the sounds associated with Dr. Dre have had a defining influence on artists such as Dj Quik, Daz Dillinger, and Warren G. There are many songs that provide the true gangsta, g-funk styles such as ‘Regulate’ by Warren G, ‘Gin & Juice’ and ‘Let Me Ride’ by Dr. Dre feat Snoop Dogg, and ‘It Was A Good Day’ by Ice Cube.
