Developed in the 1980s, hardcore hip-hop beats emerged from the East Coast hip-hop scene. It first began with artists such as Schoolly D, Public Enemy and Run D.M.C. shunning themes of bragging and partying in their music. Instead they started to include the often harsh but realistic settings of urban life. For many the first ‘hardcore hip-hop’ group was Run D.M.C.
