History

R&B Beats as it is known today is a form of hip-hop which combines soul, dance, and funk. Originally R&B was short for rhythm and blues but contemporary R&B is a sub genre of hip-hop. This style of R&B was first developed in the 1980s after the fall of disco music and has evolved further to include more and more high tech production and disco-like beats. During the 1980s yet another sub genre, this time of contemporary R&B, called quiet storm was the R&B style of choice. It focused on romantic ballads and was popular among artists such as Luther Vandross, Anita Baker and Marvin Gaye to name a few. This style lasted until the 1990s when it was overtaken by artists such as Babyface who began adding more of a hip-hop beat to the R&B sound. Instead of previous styles of R&B which relied heavily on synthesizer rhythm, a rougher sounding style was emerging from the East Coast which was heavily inspired by hip-hop.

Main Features

Contemporary R&B sounds significantly less like the original slow soulful rhythm & blues and sounds more and more like hip-hop. With hip-hop beats and adult themed lyrics, this style has moved away from traditional R&B. In order to give R&B a more modern appeal, the artists began to dress similar to hip-hop artists. Many artists wishing to keep the R&B style but not wishing to change their images to that of the hip-hop style, began collaborating with rappers who would give their singles a modern twist. The main style of contemporary R&B is the use of rhythms from drum machines with a jazzy feel. Hip-hop beats are incorporated into the tunes for an edgier feel.
